If, like me, you've been waiting 14 years since Cutting for Stone for his next one, read & rejoice in these 700 pages of more Verghese magic. If you're new to this author, Verghese is doctor and all of his works have a strong medical narrative; this one is no exception as the mystery of a family curse plays out over generations of one family in Kerala, India. Written with joy and mastery, it is an absolute delight to be swept along for the ride. (Pick up his memoir, My Own Country, next.)

Beautiful, flowing language illustrates the bonds between women serving in a little-known capacity in the European theater of WWII, and the stereotypes they were bucking. As rewarding as historical fiction gets. --Jamie F.
Like a sharp-edged cutlass, this novel eviscerates simplistic ideas about morality. Though her brutality and hard-heartedness make her difficult to like, pirate queen Shek Yeung is nevertheless hard not to root for. A briny exploration of power and the stories we tell ourselves to justify clinging to it with bloodied tooth and nail. --Talia
