IN-PERSON: Cynthia Liu and Yukiko Nakano present LUNCHBOX

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 - 5:30 pm

This FREE event is the final portion of a project by two UNC students. Come help celebrate their achievement!

Lunchbox is a collection of photos and stories of 13 Asian-owned food businesses across North Carolina. From Asheville to Carolina Beach, these pages tell the stories of immigrants, families, mothers and fathers, and communities—united and sustained by their shared love for food and the rich fabric of Asian and Asian American culture. We hope these stories resonate with you as much as they did with us.

Cynthia Liu is a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Media and Journalism (Visual Journalism focus) and English with a minor in French. Cynthia was born in Morrisville, N.C., and spent part of her childhood in Tianjin, China, in her grandparents’ 6th floor apartment. She dedicates this book to her family, her sisters, and her grandparents, and to all the meals they’ve shared.

Yukiko Nakano is a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Media and Journalism (Advertising/Public Relations focus) and Global Studies with a minor in Japanese Language. Yukiko was born in Durham, N.C., and briefly moved back to Japan for two years before settling down in Chapel Hill, N.C. She dedicates this book to her family and especially her mom, who woke up every morning before school to make her a bento box.
