Liese O’Halloran Schwarz discusses her novel The Possible World
Schwarz, a former emergency room doctor, weaves a beautiful and compelling story that traces the intersecting lives of a young boy who barely escapes a horrifying murder, the harried ER resident who tends to him, and an older woman guarding some long-buried secrets.
When six-year-old Ben is the sole survivor of a harrowing crime, Dr. Lucy Cole takes a special interest in helping him through the trauma. What he remembers is unclear, and as Lucy’s personal life unravels around her, it seems the answers for them both might lie beyond medicine. Meanwhile Clare, a nearly one hundred year old woman in a nursing home across town, begins to recollect a turbulent and mysterious past. As the narrative unfolds through their three voices, Schwarz slowly reveals what they have in common—and that what we see is not always all that is there.
Liese O’Halloran Schwarz, a former emergency-room doctor, published her first novel, a Southern mystery entitled Near Canaan, while in medical school. She lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
