Kids Event: Ashley Bryan talks about the new editions of his award-winning books:
Walk Together Children, Black American Spirituals, Volume One and
I’m Going To Sing, Black American Spirituals, Volume Two.
These two volumes are proudly published by Carrboro’s very own Alazar Press.
Ashley Bryan grew up to the sound of his mother singing from morning to night, and has shared the joy of song with children ever since. One of our most beloved illustrators, he is this year’s winner of the 2012 Coretta Scott King – Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award. This high honor follows many others including the 2009 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award and being named a New York Public Library Literary Lion in 2008 along with Salman Rushdie, Nora Ephron, and Edward Albee with Toni Morrison presenting the award. He has been a May Hill Arbuthnot lecturer, a multiple Coretta Scott King Award winner, (recently for Let It Shine), and the recipient of countless other awards and recognitions.
Bryan lives on Islesford, one of the Cranberry Isles off of the coast of Maine, where he can sometimes be found with a cluster of children, all singing or working out poetry.
Bryan's work is on display at the
April 15th through August 19th in an exhibition:
