Flyleaf's Favorite Romance of 2023
After a chemistry-filled but ultimately cringeworthy hookup with a guy she met at the bookstore bar, ghostwriter Chandler is mortified to learn that her next client, struggling actor Finn Walsh, is the very man who made her knees weak and then fully failed to understand her anatomy. So naturally, she offers to give him sex lessons. Y'all, this book SIZZLES. It's a magical experience to watch these two incredibly likeable characters connect (emotionally AND physically), and beyond gratifying to see open conversations about consent, sexual fantasy, and mutual pleasure on the page. READ THIS BOOK! --Talia
Ashley Herring Blake does sapphic romance right. Whether you're already a fan of the Bright Falls friend group, or you're just in the mood for a very hot fake dating rom-com, this book is for you. The pairing of Iris Kelly, confident and outspoken but deeply insecure in romance, with Stevie Scott, generally anxious and fiercely loyal, made my chest ache. There's also something special about the friendships in this book—not all rom-coms can capture the relationship landscape of queer community, but Iris Kelly Doesn't Date weaves that web while still centering our new favorite couple. --Alex
When Rachel's marriage to a wealthy man from a prominent political family crumbles, she rekindles her passion for art and finds herself entangled with a younger man who has his own messy family dynasty to contend with. Delicious, steamy and so much fun. --Elese
For anyone who's had a crush on Mia Hamm or Megan Rapinoe (who hasn't?), this romance scores big. Wilsner brings us lovable characters pursuing their lifelong dreams while navigating celebrity status, changing abilities, queer identity, mental health, and love. A refreshing take on smut that's non-orgasm-focused-yet-plenty-orgasmic, with heart-swelling flirtation and fast-paced sports writing. --RC
Two women explore side-by-side budding romances, holiday drama, and unexpected friendships in one festive small town. Equally chaotic and cozy—the perfect holiday read! --Emma
Tatted bodyguard Will meets small-town flower shop owner Annie and sparks fly. The unlikely pair start "dating lessons" to help Annie push past her social anxiety—and avoidant Will just might have a thing or two to learn as well. --Alex
A modern retelling of When Harry Met Sally that does its source material justice, all while carving out its own voice in this slow burn, enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance. Much like the movie, the book is both a pitch-perfect romance story and an ode to New York. Goldbeck knocks it out of the park. Vulnerable, hilarious, sexy, and earnest. --Genni, former Flyleafer
Dirty Dancing meets Before Sunrise in this essential summer romance! With second chances, found-family connections, and the sentimental setting of the lakeside Brookbanks resort throughout a hazy summer season, this is exactly what you’re looking for in your next vacation read! --Emma
A second-chance romance that will make you squeal in frustration AND giddiness. I came for the Persuasion retelling, but stayed for the way Jalaluddin writes the Syed family—the tenderness really had me. HIGHLY recommend! --Alex
Nothing is going to stop theoretical physicist Elsie from securing a tenured position at MIT—that is, nothing except for Jonathan Smith-Turner, an experimental physicist who has it out for her field, and seemingly for her as well. Elsie is a truly delightful heroine—she had me cackling like a weirdo while I read. Love, Theoretically explores when trying to endear yourself to others becomes people-pleasing that prevents true connection. I loved watching Elsie grow on the page. Plus, this romance novel taught me about physics! --Alex
This time around, Emily Henry presents us with a summer getaway in Maine, starring a witty, close-knit friend group desperate for one final happy week together in their beloved beach house. The seaside cottage setting, the energetic found family dynamic, and the charming rom-com feel—I loved it! --Emma
