Thoroughly enjoyable historical fiction. The reader follows three intrepid British children growing up in a crumbling mansion by the sea, spying on the adults and eventually staging their own theatre productions as the Roaring Twenties flow through, then World War II and adulthood. Original, delightful, and entertaining!

A candid look at the author's own upbringing as one of eleven children in an Irish Catholic family headed by a loving and eccentric father. Published: Melville House - May 17th, 2022

Beautiful, heartbreaking, and mysterious are both the characters and their crop circle creations. It’s hard to put this novel down once you start: from an aerial view it’s two downtrodden Brits; from the interior it’s two folks trying to keep themselves going with what they have—each other, and a mutual admiration for mystery.

City on Fire: A Novel By Don Winslow Cover Image

Published: William Morrow - April 26th, 2022

I devoured this novel, couldn't put it down. Sure, it's a mob story, but the characters and setting are slightly different—it's Rhode Island, but of course Boston and NY are hovering in the background. Winslow creates such believable, heartbreakingly likeable characters that I couldn't help but be on the edge of my seat as they sorted out turf wars and otherwise navigated simply staying alive. I can't wait for the rest of this series!

Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks By Patrick Radden Keefe Cover Image
ISBN: 9780385548519

Published: Doubleday - June 28th, 2022

I read Say Nothing and was wowed. I read The Snakehead and was transfixed. I put off reading Rogues because I thought it couldn't stand up, but it does. In fascinating vignettes of exotic criminals and their seedy tales, Radden pulls together complicated true crimes and presents them to the reader as a riveting game of cat-and-mouse. The tales of how-they-did it and how-they-were-caught spellbind and entertain. So well-written!

Horse: A Novel By Geraldine Brooks Cover Image

Published: Viking - June 14th, 2022

Brooks writes an inspired fictional history of the famous race horse Lexington, weaving in the story of racial injustices—both in the 19th and 21st centuries. The author clearly knows horses and history, and she writes about both with skill and humanity.

Listening Still: A Novel By Anne Griffin Cover Image

Published: St. Martin's Press - March 1st, 2022

A quirky and fulfilling story of a young Englishwoman with the amazing ability to speak with the recently dead—but wait, before you turn away after reading that—it's a warm and hopeful exploration of how she navigates her own identity and family relationships while also not letting down the people only she can help. A touch of magical realism makes this book sparkle, and the audiobook is very well done!

A solid debut featuring a young woman trying to escape her rural Texas hometown and being pulled into her family's detective business...but of course she fails at both! I look forward to reading more of this gritty, refreshing new series.
