Published: University of Texas Press - October 4th, 2022

Margo Price has found success in the world of modern country music despite struggles with addiction, enough tragedy for multiple lifetimes, and the unfortunately common predatory behavior of a male-dominated industry. This book is heartbreaking and devastating, but also hopeful, and filled with funny and insightful tales of a life lived hard (very hard, in fact) and fast on the road. A must-read for music fans. --Colin

If you’ve spent time around punk records, you’re probably familiar with the genre’s iconic album covers—the stark simplicity of the first Ramones record, The Clash’s London Calling in all its Elvis-referencing glory, the super-fun strangeness of Germ-Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex—but the covers for the singles are absolutely worth taking note of. There’s so much art and photography in this book that’s years ahead of its time. Bright colors or no color at all, weird outsider art, photos of your favorite bands that you may have never seen before, this book has it all! --Colin

Published: University of Texas Press - October 4th, 2022

Country music encompasses so much more than one would be led to believe by what's being promoted and by what has been written and rewritten about countless times. Thankfully, Francesca Royster's new book tells the story of Black songwriters/performers/fans in the white male-dominated world of popular country music. It's a history that has been obscured, hidden, white-washed, overlooked, and outright denied for far too long. This is a really fantastic and inspiring book that opens up a whole new world of country and folk music. If you think you know it all, you don't! --Colin

Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records By Jim Ruland Cover Image
ISBN: 9780306925481
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Hachette Books - April 12th, 2022

I was never really a fan of Black Flag or hardcore in general, but SST Records was a huge touchstone for me in the formation of my musical life in the 1980s. The influence of the weird, noisy, and/or more melodic SST bands like Hüsker Dü, Minutemen (and Firehose), Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Slovenly, Das Damen, etc., etc., still reverberates with me today. Filled with history of the label that I wasn’t previously aware of, this was a fun, informative, and nostalgic read for me. --Tony

Even if you don’t immediately recognize her name, you know Ronnie Spector’s haunting, beautiful, unmatched voice. Hits like “Be My Baby” and “Walking in the Rain” cemented The Ronettes as rock ‘n roll pioneers and are still absolute bangers today. Ronnie’s book originally came out in 1990, but this new edition features an introduction by Keith Richards and updates from Ronnie herself, finishing shortly before her death in January. It’s the story of music super-stardom, the horrible abuse she endured from her husband Phil Spector, and the courage and conviction it took to reinvent herself. An incredible book. --Colin

I love essay collections, and the more obscure the topic the better. Growing up, the name Harvey Fierstein was just another cultural reference I knew from shows like The Simpsons or Seinfeld. It wasn’t until years later that I learned more about the real person and how influential, important, and iconic he is. Telling stories from Broadway to Hollywood, through the ups and downs, the haunting addictions and romances, the much-deserved wins and the heartbreaking losses, I Was Better Last Night is one of the better biographies I’ve read in a while. --Colin

The first Nicolas Cage movie I ever saw was Raising Arizona, a movie I was much too young for but fell in love with regardless. Then came Con Air and Face/Off (both masterpieces), and I was hooked. Nicolas Cage has been my favorite actor for a long time, and I’m still discovering new-to-me performances that blow me away. Age of Cage uses Cage’s extensive and all-over-the-place filmography to tell a larger story about Hollywood and an actor who’s constantly challenging himself to be better, weirder, and more interesting. --Colin

Bo Jackson was—and honestly probably still is—so unbelievably good at so many different things that today, removed from the actual events, it’s hard not to mythologize him. But as is usually the case, the fact is infinitely more fascinating than the fiction. Jeff Pearlman pays tribute to Bo Jackson by reminding readers that he didn’t become this otherworldly baseball-crushing, touchdown-scoring unstoppable object by accident, but with hard work and steely determination. Bo knows, and now you know too! --Colin

Published: Doubleday - October 11th, 2022

When you see Tyler Kepner’s name on a book, you know it’s going to be both deeply researched and extremely fun. Split up into seven chapters and discussing seven unique aspects of different championships, the only problem with the book is that you’re going to want an eighth. If you read Kepner’s 2019 book K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches, you know how he can turn something that may sound dry and dull into a gripping, dramatic, and downright exciting reading experience. --Colin

Unguarded By Scottie Pippen, Michael Arkush (With) Cover Image
ISBN: 9781982165192
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Atria Books - November 9th, 2021

I’d like to think that most basketball fans that were around in the 90s recognize just how important Scottie Pippen was to that Chicago Bulls dynasty. His defense, his mid-range jumper—he was an absolute problem on the court. His story is pretty wild—tragedy, success, dealing with Michael Jordan—and who better to tell it than the man himself? Even if you know the stories, Unguarded is such a fun way to relive the championship years through the eyes of an underappreciated but integral part of the team. --Colin
