Emitt Rhodes, The Emitt Rhodes Recordings (1969-1973)

As the `60s slid gracelessly into the` 70s a small group of musicians were stripping away the excesses of Psychedelia and the bombast of Acid Rock and began creating more pastoral works influenced by the early British invasion sound combined with a mellower  sensibility. Some of the earliest purveyors of power pop  were already enormous stars, like Paul McCartney, some would become legendary for going out in a tragic blaze of glory like Badfinger. But one of these musicians, Emitt Rhodes, released four superb pop records that languished in semi-obscurity, but became legendary amongst a small cadre of pop music collectors. Out of print for many years, until Hip-O-Select put out this fabulous two- disc set in the summer of 2009, Rhodes’ records are every bit as brilliant as the work of McCartney,  and the Beatles’ influence can be heard throughout all four .  Rhodes was a veteran of several British Invasion influenced 60’s pop bands, most notably Merry-Go-Round.  Eschewing the group sensibility he recorded his first record, American Dream completely on his own, playing all instruments and engineering the record himself.

This limited edition release collects all four of Rhodes’ records. You owe it to yourself to check out one of the early geniuses of Power Pop.
