Arthur A. Levine Books, 10/2009
This is the
perfect case-study for why one should never judge a book by its cover. I would have
never picked this up because the cover just didn’t appeal to me. But when I saw
that it was nominated for a National Book Award, I decided to give it a try.
AMAZING!! Taylor’s three stories are still rattling me long after I finished
the book. These are not tales of vampires, zombies or werewolves, but stories
about OLD magic, the kind that still hides in the Carpathian Mountains, small
Eastern European villages, and desert palaces. Reminiscent of the finest of
Grimm’s tales, Taylor weaves stories where goblins can steal a soul with a
kiss, where demons still cast curses and people bargain for souls, and in a
fantastic twist, where demons use their magic to actually become more human. I
wanted the book to go on forever.
