Flyleaf YA Book Club discusses Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

Following this book club discussion we'll host Tristina Wright for a reading and signing from her debut novel 27 Hours!

All teen and adult readers are welcome, but finish the book or prepare for spoilers!  Whether you’re an actual “young adult” or an older adult who appreciates a good YA novel, join us for our young adult book club.  We always have snacks (especially candy) and an easygoing debate about our selection for each month.  We typically meet 2nd Fridays every month at 6pm, but check out our future event dates for specifics.

If you're interested in subscribing to our YA Book Club mailing list, you can join through this link.  Flyleaf Children's Manager Johanna Albrecht will send out book club meeting reminders, notices for upcoming book releases, and periodic messages about upcoming YA author events at Flyleaf.

Affectionately dubbed "the Nigerian Harry Potter," Akata Witch weaves together a heart-pounding tale of magic, mystery, and finding one's place in the world.

Twelve-year-old Sunny lives in Nigeria, but she was born American. Her features are African, but she's albino. She's a terrific athlete, but can't go out into the sun to play soccer. There seems to be no place where she fits in. And then she discovers something amazing--she is a "free agent" with latent magical power. Soon she's part of a quartet of magic students, studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality. But will it be enough to help them when they are asked to catch a career criminal who knows magic too?
