Each of the 33 essays in this first volume of a three-part collection explores the songs and song types associated with a given number between 1 and 33. Each piece culminates in the selection and discussion of the “definitive” song for that number. Why number songs? The numerals between 1 and 99 are the ones we experience most often in our daily existence—the elemental numerals that have worked their way into the rhythms of our lives, our figures of speech, our culture and our songs. My purpose—as is the case with discursive essayists everywhere—is to engage readers and make them think about things in ways they hadn’t before.
